Cape Town

South Africa · 6 spots selected · last checked 2026-09-18

Cape Town was researched for a local answer and came back without one. No source named a South African wood, flour or dairy distinctive to the city's pizza. Every strong maker is either an Italian arrival or a South African family running someone else's orthodoxy well - closer to Madrid's shape than to a city with a form of its own. That is recorded as a finding rather than as a gap, because a guide that cannot report an ordinary answer about a city is not researching it.

Pizza Connection

Owner Enrico Di Giambattista runs a Woodstock pizzeria that makes two separate doughs — Napoletana and Romana — by the business's own account using imported San Marzano tomatoes and Fior di Latte mozzarella.

NOVO Pizza + Wine

Ammy and Arno Steijn opened this family-run Little Mowbray pizzeria in March 2024, replacing Bruegel's Pizzeria in the same spot. Its Fellini is fennel sausage, caramelised red onion and fior di latte. The menu stays deliberately small — around a dozen pizzas — by the owners' own design.

Lello's Trattoria

Siblings Chiara and Danilo Turilli, third-generation South African-Italian restaurateurs, sell Roman-style pizza al taglio from a trattoria that grew out of a De Waterkant deli and relocated to a purpose-chosen strip of independent Sea Point restaurants on Penarth Road. Their own account of the kitchen names the pizza al taglio as made 'in the traditional Roman style,' alongside bronze-extruded pasta made on site.

Bardelli's

A Kenilworth neighbourhood pizzeria since 1992, Bardelli's rebuilt after a fire forced a nine-month closure and then won South Africa's national Porcupine Ridge Pizzeria Challenge in 2024, the country's own annual pizza vote among professionals and the public. Owner Grant Hawkins, running the restaurant for 17 years, attributes the win to consistency rather than novelty.

Bacini's on Kloof

Bacini's began in Johannesburg in 1989 under founder Raimondo Napoli and has run in Cape Town's Gardens since the mid-1990s; his daughter Della now operates the Kloof Street restaurant, which has kept its pizza menu deliberately unchanged through a 2020 renovation even as the rest of the menu evolved. It is a family-transmission story the business tells about itself, not one assembled from outside coverage.

Posticino

Childhood friends Jack Gasparre and Eric de Siena took over an existing Sea Point restaurant in 1998 and built it around their mothers' southern Italian recipes (their families from Bari and Naples); it has since expanded to Hout Bay and Rondebosch, with Sea Point remaining, by outside description, 'the mothership.' The business's own site tells the founders' story directly, though it does not describe the pizza's dough or oven in technical terms.
