Vienna

Vienna is a capital with a long café tradition and an imported pizza scene. Does the first tell you anything about the second?

Austria · 6 spots selected · last checked 2026-09-19

Vienna is a straightforward import city on the evidence gathered, and the boundary was the easiest in this guide to apply: the city and the federal state coincide, so there is no metropolitan area to annex by accident. All six records sit inside the 23 districts. The city's serious pizza is Neapolitan technique brought by named makers, and the records are filed on that basis rather than on a local claim nobody made. Vienna's own food identity is strong and lies elsewhere; that a city with deep culinary institutions of its own runs an imported pizza culture is itself a useful observation for a guide asking which cities made something. Vienna's honest position is a competent, well-run field with no indigenous form and no institution old enough to carry the heritage dimension. Recording that plainly is worth more than reaching for a distinctiveness claim the sources do not support.

Selected in Vienna

Il Mare

Il Mare states plainly on its own site that it is Vienna's first pizzeria, opened in 1975 by Pasquale Tavella; the business has stayed in the same family for fifty years, with his daughter Grazia Tavella-Sevilmis taking over operations in 2016 and the restaurant marking its fiftieth anniversary in 2025. It still bakes wood-fired pizza alongside classic Italian dishes and Bistecca alla Fiorentina.

Via Toledo Enopizzeria

Via Toledo is a Neapolitan pizzeria in Vienna, and its dough out of the wood oven is the high point of a meal here. One of its pizzas has won a 'Weltmeisterpizza' (world champion pizza) title at a pizza competition. The restaurant's own site could not be verified in this pass — see notes.

Disco Volante

Open in Mariahilf since 2013, Disco Volante bakes its Neapolitan pizza daily in a purpose-built southern Italian wood oven shaped like a giant mirrorball, made from Vesuvius volcanic rock. The business has since grown into a small local group (a delivery arm, a home-pizza retail line, and 'Scuola Volante', which it states is Austria's first Neapolitan pizza school), evidence of a genuine specialist commitment beyond one dining room.

Bros. Pizza

Bros. Pizza describes itself, in its own name and site title, as a 'Sauerteigpizza' bakery-and-stand-up bar (Pizza Bäckerei & Stehbeisl). What it makes is pizza nach Wiener Art on echte Wiener-Sauerteig-Kultur — a genuine Viennese sourdough culture rather than an imported Neapolitan one — with seasonal, regional toppings, and it stands deliberately apart from the Neapolitan orthodoxy that reached Vienna late and by import.

MIO – A Piece of Neapel (Donauzentrum)

MIO's Naples-born pizzaiolo Antonio Arino was crowned European pizza-making champion at the European Pizza Excellence Germany competition in Hamburg on 12 March 2024 — a named professional's technique validated by a dedicated pizza competition rather than by a general restaurant ranking. The Donauzentrum branch has served 'authentic Neapolitan pizza' from a shopping-centre foodcourt location since November 2022, and was known to regulars as a specialist's kitchen before the title made it a headline.

Pizzeria Pummarò

A small, self-described 'vera pizzeria napoletana' in Meidling, Pummarò ferments its dough 48 hours before use and tops it with named specialty ingredients (fior di latte, Prosciutto di Parma, 'nduja calabrese), served alongside espresso the business roasts itself in Naples. It has since grown from a single eight-seat room to a second Vienna location.
